Hey Friends-
It's been awhile since I've posted, but the music continues. The Weekly gig at the REcord Bar is epic and we've had some great guest spots by local dj's. This Thursday Sike Steez will be coming out with ton's of new bags o tricks. hope you can make it. Record Bar is 1020 Westport Road (old westport) 10pm=1:30 am 3 bux.
The world lost a couple of music giants in the last month. Wilson Pickett is best known for "Land of a 1000 dances" and "Midnight Hour" . My money cut has always been "Engine number 9" (sampled most famously by Black Sheep). This cut still gets folks moving 30 years later.
Ray Barretto fused Puerto Rican sounds with Black American soul to help create the Nu-Yorican sound of the 1960's. Playing congas and timblaes Barretto cut everything from traditional salsa and merengue to jazz, funk and fusion. The cut "Acid" is from the late sixties and was re-released on the Soul Jazz compilation Nu-Yorican Soul five years back.
